Any thoughts on the murder of Theo Van Gogh earlier this month, the Dutch film maker who made a controversial documentary on the Muslim treatment of women? Does this sort of art help the world or not?

Oh, man. Don't even get me started. I was fuming when I read about this one: let's just say that I've always loved the Dutch, and I've always had less than appreciative feelings for Islam. Let me also just say that now I'm itchin' to see that movie he made. Theo Van Gogh, Rest In Peace. Your message was not lost on the ears of the world.

If Western countries continue, out of ignorance, fear, or narrow self interest, to refuse to find out, they will find themselves playing host to many more incidents like the bloody scene in Amsterdam. And the more likely it becomes that the killing of van Gogh will be the first of many

Assassination is what it is. Let's not make too much of it - could have been a nutter what did it.
More important: Iraq, Dr Congo, Sudan, , ...

One of the reason Theo Van Gogh was controversial in Holland is he has been outspokenly anti-Moslem, and the movie you are talking about was made in junction with a far rightist woman member of the Dutch parliament who has been backing legislation that is very anti-immigration...since his murder he has been deified by a number of far rightist, and they have been burning mosque, and Islamic schools. Now it is becoming very polarized her and Moslem fundamentalist are beginning to burn Christian school and churches...and are warning of terrorist action like bombings if the burning of mosque and Islamic schools doesn't end. What seems to be happening is the beginnings of a civilization war--which I feared would become global after 9/11-- with the accompanying empowering of the right to replace individual rights with stringent security measures.
Minister Zalm announced "the Dutch Government declares war on Islam Extremism" which made even members of his own rightist government flinch, and which all the other parties condemned.
In certain designated areas of Holland now the police can search me on the street without a warrant or the need to show cause, as long as they search everybody else on the block.
It is a very scary situation and moderates of every religious persuasion, including humanist agnostics and atheist are getting very apprehensive. This is no longer the tolerant Netherlands, which you all identify with. I should add Moslem youths are going to sporting event with signs saying Kill the Jews, and doing so at Anti-war protest, which make difficult for non-anti Semitic individuals to join the protest...
This is just to loosely fill you in on what's happening here....

#8: no it isn't: "This more than a murder this is a cut to the roots of freedom".
It was just a murder by a crazy fucker.
Let's concentrate on more important things.
(and if you refer to Ferdinand then I probably have no defence).
In the warmth of our homes it's easy to be outraged by close events.
Think GLOBAL.
...
Request: Could someone out there create a graph/whatever showing Country v number of deaths v time?
Could be organised by war, disease, accident, murder, ... whatever
Might be interesting?
